Music & Culture
Our students have opportunities to participate in a wide range of cultural activities.
These currently include chess, Chorale, Choir, debating, drama, Future Problem Solving, Kapa Haka, Ukulele Orchestra, Guitar Club, Rock Band, Jazz Band, Music Festivals, Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, School Musical (biennially), Science Fair, speech competitions, technology challenges, dance and private music lessons.
Abilities and interests are catered for in a range of musical groups.
The groups perform at school assemblies and on special occasions, including at various festivals and by invitation.
Vocal Groups
Students who would like to sing in a large group audition at the beginning of each year.
Chorale (very able singers, sing harmonies) – Involved in the North West Schools’ Music Festival, Christchurch Schools’ Music Festival and special school assemblies.
Choir (sing for enjoyment, mostly melodies) – Involved in assembly performances and the Christchurch Schools’ Music Festival.
Private singing lessons are also available.

Instrumental
Cobham has an orchestra, a chamber orchestra for the advanced players, a school band, a ukulele orchestra and a guitar club.
Instrumental tuition is available for learners of violin, flute, clarinet, saxophone, piano, guitar, brass, drums, bass guitar and digital technologies, keyboard and theory.
Students who would like to play an instrument in an orchestra audition at the beginning of the year.
Orchestra – all instruments of the orchestra. Usually need to have learnt for 2 years (some exceptions)
Chamber Orchestra – Students are invited to play in this group by the orchestra conductor.
Both orchestras are conducted by Mark Hodgkinson who can be contacted via the school office.

Kapa Haka
Cobham has a large kapa haka group that is led by Matua Anton. The group meets every Tuesday morning to learn waiata, haka and traditional Māori games. This group performs at the Christchurch Cultural Festival in Term 3 and at special school events.
