FUTURE PROBLEM SOLVING (FPS) SUCCESS

Tony Lane —

On Wednesday of each week Cobham offers two different Future Problem Solving FPS programmes, FPS Global Issues (GIPS) - a futuristic problem solving programme, and FPS Scenario Writing - an individual, science fiction writing competition. At the end of Term 3 students in these programmes competed in the qualifying round to establish FPS national finalists.

In the GIPS programme one Year 7 team and one Year 8 team got to the semi-final stage. The Year 7 team members were: Thomas K (20) Jack P and Finlay C (19) and Abby R (18); the Year 8 team members were: Callum H, Sam G, Ruby C (12) and Leo B (11). In Scenario Writing three individual students reached the semi-final stage: Brianna Y (12) Anna S (11) and Cameron H (17).

A Year 7 GIPS team, Prue M (18) Katie B and Donovan B (19) and Corin S (20) qualified for Nationals and last weekend in Auckland, they came in the top 5 teams in NZ.

Year 8 student Tasmin D-M (12) also qualified for Nationals as a Scenario Writer. Her submitted scenario came 2nd in NZ, which means it can be electronically submitted to FPS International Conference next year. Tasmin also competed in the Onsite Scenario Writing competition in Auckland, and writing in a team of five and the youngest writer in the team, Tasmin came 3rd.

Two Year 8 students, Vanya B and William W (both in Room 12) also qualified for Nationals in the GIPS Individual Division, with Vanya coming 2nd in NZ and William becoming NZ champion. It also means that William is eligible to compete at FPS International Conference in the USA in June 2017, representing both Cobham and New Zealand.

We are very proud of all these FPS students and their outstanding achievements.
