Success for Cobham at the 2023 Zespri AIMS Games

Courtney Ross —

Our team of 46 students headed up to Tauranga to represent Wairarapa Cobham at the national AIMS Games sports tournament.

A huge congratulations to all students who were involved.

Outlined below are the final results for each of the sports.


TEAM SPORTS


BASKETBALL - Girls

4th place winners overall, out of 20 teams.

Team Player Award: Kendall McGregor


HOCKEY - Mixed

18th place overall, out of 53 teams.

Team Player Award: Lola Wood


WATER POLO - Open

17th place overall, out of 26 teams. Bowl winners.

Team Player Award: Louis O'Neil


INDIVIDUAL SPORTS


BADMINTON

Singles Girls

  • Rina K placed 4th overall and Amelia B reached the round of 16, out of 139 women's singles.

Singles Boys

  • Eric X and Alex L advanced to the round of 16, out of 159 men's singles players.

Doubles Girls

  • Rina & Amelia placed 3rd overall, out of 55 teams, winning Bronze!

Doubles Boys

  • Alex & Eric placed 4th overall, out of 64 teams.

Rina was also awarded a Fair Play medal for demonstrating outstanding fair play during competition. Well done, Rina!


BMX

  • Cooper M placed 3rd overall in year 7 boys, winning Bronze!

There were 6 races. Cooper made his way to the top 8, and then got 3rd in the final race.

  • Cooper also placed 3rd in the 1 lap time trial, winning Bronze!


CROSS COUNTRY

Individuals

  • Year 7 girls: Bela C placed 33rd

  • Year 8 girls: Aimee F placed 30th

  • Year 8 boys: Brent C placed 11th and Kento S placed 35th.

Team Relay

  • In the 6x 1km team relay, the team won 4th place overall, with a narrow 0.89-second finish behind the 3rd placing team. Brent and Kento ran two legs of the race each, while Bela and Aimee ran one.

Bela was also awarded a Mercury Wonderful Energy Award. These were awarded to nominated students for outstanding commitment to having a great attitude and positive energy. Well done, Bela! 


ROCK CLIMBING

  • Ivana P finished in 14th place in the year 7 girls.

  • Nicholas P finished in 26th place in the year 8 boys.


SQUASH

Singles Girls

  • Ivana P placed 2nd overall, out of 20 individuals, winning Silver!

Singles Boys

  • Nicholas P placed 8th overall, out of 45 individuals, but unfortunately lost to the top seed in the quarterfinals.


SWIMMING

Individuals: Top 10 Placings

  • Indy L placed 2nd overall in the 50m freestyle, winning Silver!

  • Indy L placed 2nd overall in the 200m freestyle, winning Silver!

  • Indy L placed 6th overall in the 100m IM

  • Catherine S placed 10th in the 200m breaststroke

  • Indy L placed 7th in the 100m backstroke

  • Catherine S placed 8th in the 100m butterfly

  • Catherine S placed 7th in the 200m backstroke

  • Indy L placed 8th in the 200m IM

  • Catherine S placed 9th in the 50m backstroke

  • Indy L placed 10th in the 50m backstroke

  • Brian Ren placed 10th in the 50m breaststroke

  • Indy L placed 4th in the 100m freestyle

  • Numerous personal bests were achieved by our swimmers in their individual races.

Relays

  • Cobham placed 2nd overall in the 6x50m Mixed Freestyle Relay, winning Silver!

Team members: Tama, Faris, Brian, Charlotte, Indy, Catherine.

  • Cobham placed 2nd overall in 4x50m Mixed Freestyle Relay, winning Silver!

Team members: Tama, Faris, Catherine, Indy.


TABLE TENNIS

Teams event

  • Cobham won 9th place overall.

Doubles

  • Alex W and Eddie J finished in the top 8

  • Dom P and Alex dB finished in the top 16.

Singles (out of 126 players)

  • Dom placed in the top 8

  • Eddie got through to the last 4 in the plate round

  • Alex and Alex got into the top 32.
