Basketball Trials

This is the registration for your child to trial, and if selected, play for a Cobham Basketball team in 2024.

Basketball is one of our biggest sports at Cobham and games are played on a Friday after school/evening. The number of teams and competitions that we enter, will be dependent on numbers, talent, AND availability of volunteers who are willing to coach.

If students are selected for a Cobham Basketball team, they MUST be prepared to play every week. If they are successful in being selected in one of our top teams, there will also be the opportunity to play in other tournaments throughout the year, some of which include trips outside of Christchurch in the school holidays (these are not compulsory if you just want to play on Friday nights).

There will be a fee of approximately $80 per student for the basketball season (terms 2 & 3), which covers registration fees, venue hire, coaches, & uniforms. Tournaments will be paid in addition to this amount. As basketball is an OPTIONAL extra-curricular activity at Cobham, payment must be made prior to the beginning of the season.

Trials dates for these teams will be held during school time during week 9.

Registrations for these trials close Friday 15th March

Competitive Winter Sport

Competitive Winter Sport is an opportunity for students to compete against other schools in the CAIMS Weekly Winter Sports Competition. It runs weekly for 10 consecutive weeks during school time in terms 2 & 3 and the competition begins on Tuesday 21 May (week 5 of term 2).

Competitive sports on offer are: (note that ALL sports are open to all genders).

  • Badminton
  • Football
  • Hockey
  • Netball
  • Rugby Rippa
  • Rugby Tackle 10s
  • Squash
  • Table Tennis

Trials

There will be trials for all sports where the number of students registered exceeds the amount students we are able to enter. Based on previous years, there will likely be trials for the following sports: hockey, football, rugby tackle, rippa, netball, table tennis, & badminton.

The trial period will begin on Thursday 28th March during school time and will run for three weeks (weeks 9, 10 &11 of term 1), with week 1 of term 2 being a contingency day. The aim is that every child should aim to attend as many trials as possible to ensure they have sufficient time in front of the selectors. To ensure trials are as fair as possible for all students, there will be at least two selectors for each sport.

The number of teams we have on offer will be dependent on the number of parent volunteers we have to coach teams.

If your child is not selected in a team for Competitive Winter Sport, or they do not wish to trial, they will participate in a sporting activity either at school or an off-site venue during our winter sport time on a Tuesday afternoon in terms 2 & 3. In previous years we have offered paid off-site activities for students to opt into, such as ice-skating, gymnastics, and ten-pin bowling, as well as providing free sporting activities that take place at school. More information regarding non-competitive paid and free options will available and sent out soon.

All fees for additional extracurricular activities your child opts into are added to your child's school account and must be paid before that activity begins. Please contact Jo McGregor (finance@wci.school.nz) if you have any queries regarding payments or your school account. As it is an optional activity, if it remains unpaid your child may be unable to participate. There will be a fee to pay to participate in winter sport, which covers the bus fares. This will be between $55-$65.

Please note that NO LATE REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

Registrations close at the end of the day on Wednesday 13 March.

Korfball

Korfball is an exciting sport that is growing in popularity in Canterbury and we are thrilled to be able to get this sport up and running at Wairarapa Cobham Intermediate this year.

We would love to get students participating with the intention of exposing them to a new sporting option and developing new skills. For most players this will be a new sport to them, which has elements of Netball and Basketball.

We are fortunate to have the wonderful MIXX coaches come in and run sessions with each class this term. They will teach students about the rules of the game and some skills to play it.

MIXX are holding a tournament for schools in Christchurch to compete in. This is being held on Monday 8th April (Monday Week 11 Term 1).

We will look to hold trials if we get big numbers so we can put some teams together, otherwise we will try to run a few skills sessions prior to the tournament.

We would love to have lots of people sign up! No experience required! There will be plenty of opportunities to learn how the game works. Here is a link to watch what the game looks like.

Please fill this form in to sign up by Friday 8th March at 3pm: Registration Form
