On Friday 31 August, at Cobham Intermediate’s weekly assembly Mr Fowler talked about how music is hindering the learning of students.

The student leaders put on a play and students watched a video explaining why wearing headphones while learning does not help you to concentrate. The play the student leaders put on consisted of a ‘teacher’ instructing students to read, but when reading, a ‘student’ listens to music causing him to not know what’s going on. The play was an example but a video explained the science behind listening to music while learning. In a nutshell, the video explained how humans are terrible at multitasking and pretty much can’t do it. However, in the video they did not say, ‘don’t listen to music’, they simply said to take music breaks in between learning time.

From now on students will not be allowed listen to music while learning. The only exception is when they a creating art, as the brain does not need to work nearly as hard.
