EPro8 Columba Competition Complete for 2024

Mr A Sparrow —

EPro8 is an engineering, problem solving and innovation challenge for students in years 5 to 8. This year, the competition ran throughout the last week, from the 18th to the 22nd of March.

For this year's competition the students were tasked with three challenges: the Queen’s Throne, the Puppet Show, and the Buzzy Bee.

The Queen’s Throne tasks the competitors with making a large chair in which pushing on the back rest would automatically elevate the foot rest. This challenge involved complex gear linkages that many teams found challenging.

The Puppet Show tasked the students with making an automatic puppershow operated by a single individual pulling on a series of ropes. These ropes opened the curtains, scrolled the background screen and moved the show's puppet. The challenge was a favourite for many teams this year.

The Buzzy Bee challenge required the students to use maths to scale up the proportions of a buzzy bee toy to make a replica 5x the size.

The scores have been tallied and the winning team will be announced at the next assembly. Our winning team will represent Columba at the interschool competition on April 8 and 9.

Congratulations to everyone who participated this year. The feedback from all the  supervising staff has been that the teams were overwhelmingly positive, engaged and above all else, impressive!
