Year 13 Classics: Ara Pacis Augustae
Classics students have been designing their own altars
Between 13-9 BCE, Emperor Augustus outlined his vision for Rome when he commissioned construction of his Ara Pacis Augustae (Altar of Augustan Peace). The altar included references to Rome’s mythical past, whilst highlighting the abundance and prosperity which Rome’s first emperor longed for after nearly 200 years of constant war. This week, Year 13 Classical Studies students stepped into his sandals as they designed their own versions of the Ara Pacis, giving over pieces of themselves as they set forth their messages of empire.
Championing the arts, living for the moment, remembering their dearly departed and just being kind and considerate were among the recurring themes, illuminated by the words of modern-day icons such as Frank Ocean, Taylor Swift and Kanye West. The activity highlighted the ways in which Roman emperors used propaganda to instil belief and unity among their citizens, wonderfully illustrating to our very own leaders of tomorrow that they are not so far removed from their ancient forebears.
