Celebrating Chinese language week

Ms I Ding —

To celebrate the Middle Autumn Festival (Moon Festival) and Chinese Language week 2021, there are multi activities arranged at Columba College.

Year 0-1 and Year 2 students learned how Chinese people celebrate the Moon Festival in the past and now. They designed their own mooncakes and lanterns, and learned the Chinese legend about the festival. Year 3 to Year 8 Chinese students had very good team work to answer the Middle Autumn Festival Quiz and play mooncake games in class.

During Chinese Language Week, form classes played the “General Information about China” Kahoot game. Top 3 winners won the Chinese fortune cookies. Every day, a Chinese phrase is sent to all students and staff to learn.

A three-day Chinese dance and martial arts were organised for Year 0-12 Chinese classes. Ms Susan Xu, who is our special guest. She taught students chopsticks dance and Tai Chi fans in classes. Mr Leven Wu, who is Ms Xu’s son, taught students Long Fist -third form martial arts.

The Chopsticks Dance is often seen at a festival or celebration. The dancers are holding a bunch of chopsticks in two hands, the dancer remains on the same spot, shaking his shoulders quickly, along with the bending and stretching of legs and rocking of body.

"Chinese Taichi fans" is a type of Chinese Martial-Arts. It is a mind and body harmony exercise. Fan tai chi is believed to help relieve stress and improve coordination.

To support Chinese Language Week, a special video was made from NZ 15 schools talking about Chinese Learning and Chinese Language week. Year 11 Tayla Finlay is at number 4, she represents Columba College to promote Chinese language learning to everyone. Xiexie Tayla. Well done. Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ojao6jDM9Ds

We could not have the successful week without you. Thank you so much for your time and effort.
