Future Focus: Design Workshop at Massey University

Ms K Evans —

On Thursday evening last week, Year 13 students Amelia Francis, Masyn Harrex and Eri Lovegrove flew to Wellington to experience life in Design for a day. This is what they made of the experience in Poneke, our capital city.

Eri: On the 16th of June, Ms Evans took us up to Wellington to attend Massey University’s Experience day. Our flight there was quite turbulent at one point and we definitely lifted a few centimetres up off our seats! The next day we visited Massey University and listened to speakers talk in ‘the Pit’ about the different courses that could be taken there, including Visual Communication Design, Fine Arts and Fashion.

Masyn: On Friday morning, after walking a couple blocks from our hostel, we arrived at the Massey University campus. The foyer was filled with excited students from all over the country. We were separated into our different groups and Eri, Amelia and I made our way to a room called ‘the Garage’. We were challenged by the Visual Communication Design lecturers to construct human sized letters of different fonts made out of large sections of cardboard. We were assigned the letter K. At the end of the session, all the letters were placed together spelling KIA ORA. After lunch, all the students gathered in a lecture theatre for a student panel, where Massey students told us about their experiences and where we were able to ask them questions. Some included student life, accommodation, classes/workload and scholarships.

Amelia: After the student panel we were given the opportunity to view Massey’s two halls of residence. The first hall we visited was close to the University’s campus while the second we visited was located closer to Wellington’s city centre. After the tour we still had some time left before we had to head back home so we decided to go through Te Papa. Te Papa had an exhibition about New Zealand artist Robin White; it was a great experience to view her talented art works in person. We then made our way back to the airport to catch our flight back home which was luckily a lot more tame than our one on the way up.
