Cricket

Mr A Everett —

2021 was a rebuilding year for Columba Cricket, after a number of experienced, Year 13 players graduated and left the team. But it didn't take long for the girls who were left to quickly gel with those that were new to join.

Wednesday cricket ticked along, but it was the Bates Cup that was our goal. In the first game against Southland Girls, we performed well, beating them to move to the next round. Emily Brosnahan did a great job with the bat and pulled us through to a good total, further progressing the team to the semi-final against Wakatipu. Unfortunately, we relaxed a little too much and batted poorly, which resulted in Wakatipu taking the well-deserved win and moving through to the final.

At the onset of the new season in Term 4, Otago Cricket began trialling a new format, whereby players are split into grades based on their ability. Teams are still learning the ins and outs of the new competition and adjusting to the change. It is hoped that the change will benefit Girls Cricket, and that the sport will continue to grow in the region. At Columba, we support any initiatives presented that will increase the playing numbers and skills of girls in the region.

It was great to see Emily and Louisa continue to impress, gaining Otago Representative honours. A special thank you to Mike Brosnahan, who has coached Columba Cricket teams for 8 years. His dedication to the sport and the school has been very much appreciated, and the girls will miss the time and support he has given them.
