Columba Ice Skaters continue to reach for the Stars

Mrs. G Beardmore —

What an amazing year it has been for our Columba College Ice Skaters. Outstanding results have been achieved across a number of competitions, including the recent NZ Ice Figure Skating National Championships in Dunedin!

Columba College had a number of students competing at the National Championships that were held during the October school holidays.

Year 8 student, Madison, placed 2nd in the Basic Novice Girls grade, and her performance saw her make it into the New Zealand B team, which was her overall goal! Madison was also named in the NZ Development Squad, and she will be aiming to wear the NZ Jacket for the first time at ‘Oceania’ next year in Australia. A fantastic result for a young skater who is showing great promise and development in the discipline of ice skating! Congratulations Madison, we are very proud of your achievements. Keep up the great work!

Year 12 student, Rebekah, also skated very well at the National Ice Skating Champs placing 2nd in the Mixed Age Synchro with fellow Columba College Year 10 student Selina and their team Cutting Edge! There was just over 1 point separating 1st and 2nd place! In the Junior Women's Solo performance, Rebekah scored 85.01 placing her 7th overall. A fabulous result and a very competitive senior grade score where 0.1 of a mark can make a significant difference. Skaters in this grade are contesting for Junior Grand Prix places and International competition selection. Rebekah was also selected for the New Zealand B Team and qualified for the NZ Development Squad in both disciplines. Incredible results Rebekah, well done!

Selina has had an extraordinary year with her figure skating, participating in the solo skating and synchronised skating divisions. She has moved up one level in her solo skating, participated in two levels of competition this year, and achieved some great results. Selina was honoured to represent New Zealand in the Oceania International Figure Skating competition and finished 10th. She won 1st place in the Clucas Cup (NZ selection competition), 2nd in the Otago skating competition, 2nd in the South Island competition and successfully qualified for the NZ Development Squad. At the recent National Champs in Dunedin, despite competing with an injury, Selina placed 6th overall in her Advanced Novice Girls Category with a score of 50.57. Wow! What a year for this talented ice-skating athlete. Congratulations, Selina!

In the synchronised skating competition, Rebekah and Selina's Cutting Edge Team won the championship at the DISC and South Island competition, placed 2nd at the National competition, and successfully qualified for NZ Rep and Development Squad selection. Incredible! Well done girls.

What a year for our young athletes on the ice. Rebekah, Selina, and Madison, we are in awe of your talent, artistry, hard work, and drive for excellence. Columba is extremely proud of you and your achievements this year, and we look forward to following your progress with interest.
