Columba Day Bookmark Competition

Dr Macleod —

Every year, we produce a school bookmark as part of our St Columba Day celebrations. Entries are now being received for this year's design.

Bookmark entries need to meet the following criteria:

  • Students of any age can enter
  • The design needs to be about 25cm x 7cm in size (the winning design will be reduced for printing)
  • The design should reflect something about Columba College and/or Saint Columba (see below for suggestions)
  • Preference will be given to hand-drawn art (rather than graphic design)
  • Entries are due to Dr Macleod by 3pm on Friday 22 May.

There are aspects of St Columba's story that are quite relevant in our current circumstances. St Columba spent much of his life in exile - in his case, this was a result of a terrible mistake he made as a young man. St Columba experienced isolation whilst travelling by boat to Iona with only a small group of friends, and when starting a monastery on that remote island. Despite the challenges of exile, Iona became renowned as a centre of learning, music and art.

Connections with any of these aspects of St Columba's story would be particularly relevant for this year's bookmark design.
