Sevens SISS Event Success

Miss Turnbull —

Last month the Senior A Sevens team competed in the South Island Secondary Schools Sevens Tournament in Timaru.

After an undefeated Otago Secondary School Season and a third consecutive title to their name the Columba College Senior A Sevens Team decided to take their talents out of the region and take on the rest of the South Island.  The group had a very successful weekend, winning all of their pool games and progressing to the playoffs. They convincingly won their Semi against Christchurch Girls High School B team 35-7, in what was a highlight of the tournament. This exciting group have been very in-sync and strong connections have meant not losing a single game in 2 and a half years.  The final was set to be a tough match up against a very strong Christchurch Girls Top Team.  Beginning with a hiss and a roar, scoring an impressive try from the kick-start, it was a wave of red from there on - unfortunately narrowly losing to a better side on the day. Columba played their absolute hearts out and left everything on the field, and we couldn't be more proud of their efforts. Throughout the weekend the girls played some great sevens and have continuously improved as a team over the past couple of years, with aims of looking forward to another phenomenal season next year.

Special mention to Year 12 athletes Olivia Fowler and Maia Joseph,  whom played for the U18 Otago Representative team in the South Island Tournament held on the November 3 also in Timaru. These students played a vital role amongst other Dunedin secondary school players  which resulted in the team going forward to win the tournament. Further to this, both Olivia and Maia were nominated for the U18 New Zealand 7’s team, which is a huge accomplishment and deserved accolade for two incredibly talented stars.
