Columba College Students Conquer Challenge Wanaka

Mrs G Beardmore —

Challenge Wanaka features one of the world's toughest and most stunning triathlon courses set against the spectacular alpine backdrop of New Zealand's Southern Alps. Four Columba College students competed in Challenge Wanaka on Saturday and did exceptionally well.

It is New Zealand’s largest triathlon festival, featuring events for all ages and abilities involving over 2,000 participants, attracting 10,000 spectators and a massive global audience. Rachael Turner (Year 13), Jo O'Halloran (Year 12), Kayla Millar (Year 11), and Emma Morton (Year 11) formed the talented 'Columba Doves' team and participated in the gruelling challenge on what was a magical day in Wanaka.

Teams competing in the Challenge Wanaka Half are to be made up of 4 or 5 athletes consisting of one swimmer, one or two cyclists, and two runners. Rachael and Jo split the running leg between them, Emma Morton completed the swim, and Kayla Millar individually completed the cycle leg of 90km which was an amazing effort.

Swim Course – 1.9km

Bike Course – 90km

Run Leg – 21.1km

The girls were extremely proud of their efforts, and reported that participating in the event was a fantastic experience despite conditions being very hot, hard, and challenging! Considering they were only one of two all-girls teams, and had only one cyclist to complete the 90km cycle leg, this was truly an amazing feat.
