Fabric and Fibre Fun in Year 6

Ms R Moore —

This term our art unit has been fabric and fibre with a focus on learning to weave in different materials.

We started with Tanzanian fabrics, looked at the patterns and what colours and designs would work together. After cutting, measuring, ironing and weaving we produced some fantastic stars, all without any sewing. This proved challenging but we persevered and were proud of our finished products.

The next stage was learning about the rules and protocol of flax gathering and weaving. After we had cut and softened the flax with our scissors we were ready to begin. Our first creation had to be given away as part of the flax customs and we all attempted different things. Some of us did the stars and others created flowers, fish and bracelets.

We have learnt how valuable fabrics and fibres are to different cultures and how they are put to use in their everyday life. Our weaving skills have improved greatly as we progressed through the term. Enjoy our final steps and products!
