Breaking Barriers and Leading from the Front...

Miss D Turnbull —

On Sunday 20th September, Alexandra Cockerill competed in a trap shooting competition in Waimate. Overall there were 9 girls and around 39 boys competing in what turned out to be a fiercely close competition.

It was a great day out with great weather to match and a nice calming sky - perfect conditions to Trap Shoot in. Alex scored a 10 in her single rise, a 29 in the point score and 5 in her single barrel. We are extremely proud of her efforts as this was the first proper event she had taken part in.

This is a relatively new sport at Columba and has built from a Year 12 student's passion to try something new and follow in family footsteps. Currently Alex is the only one at Columba who shoots, she represents the dove with pride and is aiming to grow the sport here before her time is up, so the Trap Shooting legacy can live on into the future. Next year the plan is to create a full team to compete at the STAC Summer Sports exchange and learn the skill as this year the competition side of trap shooting is winding down for the season.

Alex attends weekly training sessions and shoots alongside three other St Hilda’s girls on a Wednesday at the Dunedin Clay Shooting Club. If you are interested please feel free to contact Alex Cockerill or wait for the sign ups that Miss Turnbull will send out early in Term One of 2021.
