Guest Speaker Pennie Hunt at Book Week

Mrs E Harris —

Pennie is a Dunedin-based writer and director who is currently working on her first feature-length script

In 2020, Pennie was the first South Island-based director to be selected for the Emerging Female Filmmaker Incubator facilitated by the Directors and Editors Guild New Zealand.

We were lucky enough to have Pennie come into the College on Thursday to speak with the girls about why she became a writer and her journey as a female director in the film industry, which is still very much a 'male' world.

Pennie also spoke about how she is currently working on her first feature, 'Tandem', about a low-vision Paralympic cyclist who has to learn to steer her own life, initially funded through a New Zealand Writers Guild Seed Grant in 2019. She says that the story resonates with her as, for many women, our female friends are often the closest relationships we will have in our lives.

Find out more about Pennie's projects by clicking the following links: Punikaiki Productions - founded by New Zealand writer/director Pennie Hunt and German-born producer Stefan Roesch. The company is based in Port Chalmers. Film Quest is an award-winning film tourism startup run by Pennie Hunt and Stefan Roesch. You can also watch Pennie's most recent short film, 'Milk', here.

Pennie is also working on a comedic TV series set in Dunedin called 'Dog Town' with her friend and short story writer Kathryn van Beek as well as a surreal short film called 'The End of Magic'.
