Volleyball Round Up (Term 1)

Mrs G Beardmore —

Thank you to all our amazing student coaches, parent managers and volleyball supporters from the Columba Community who have made the start of volleyball for 2023 such a positive one! Some encouraging results were achieved across the board, highlighting the progress seen within this sport at Columba College over the past few years. The future of Volleyball is most definitely looking bright!

It has been a real pleasure to follow our Volleyball teams across this term, from our top Senior A team who played so well at the Otago Secondary School and National Championships, to our four young 'middies' teams registered in the Year 7/8 volleyball grade at the Edgar Centre, it has been a bright and uplifting experience to see the joy that volleyball has provided our students.

Columba is extremely proud of the results achieved by all teams this season, and is even more proud of the display of team spirit, sportsmanship, pride and commitment evident each week during competition. There were many highlights, however the following selection of results are a reflection of how well our teams have done.

Seniors: (please also see separate article regarding our Senior A team)

Columba Senior A - Premier Women's Division final play off (3 vs 4)

Columba Senior Doves - Div 2 finalist (1 vs 2)

Juniors:

Columba 10A - Div 1 finalist (1 vs 2)

Columba Junior Pink - Div 2 final playoff (3 vs 4)

Columba Junior Purple - Div 4 final playoff (1 vs 2)

Middies:

Columba 8 Spikers and Columba 8 Rockets - Middies Girls division finalists (1 vs 2). Please see coach's report below;

Friday night Volleyball has been never been quite as exciting as the Grand Final face off between the top two ranked teams - Columba 8 Spikers vs Columba 8 Rockets.

The Rockets were off to a flying start quickly taking a 5 point lead with impressive serving, rattling the favourites. The Spikers eventually settled in to their game plan, which is basically “Serves win Games”. The Spikers staged a comeback, serving strongly to take out the first set. The second set went down to the wire with both teams performing well under pressure. A nail biting finish at 26-24.

Result: Columba 8 Spikers 2-0.

It was a great end to the season with these two Columba teams taking the top spots. The future of Volleyball looks strong with a total of four Columba teams in the Girls Middles Division.

The Spikers remain undefeated following their second season of Middles Volleyball. A remarkable achievement that is down to their hard work and commitment but most importantly how much they enjoy themselves.

Thanks to the awesome bunch of parents/caregivers who also supported the team. And a huge thank you to Mr Sparrow and Ms Beardmore who are there every Friday organising the teams.

Hope to see everyone back in Term 4. New players are always welcome. (By Coach C)

A wonderful write up that summarises a wonderful term! Thank you again to our fantastic student and parent coaches and managers. Major acknowledgement to Mr Sparrow for your organisational mastery and incredible dedication in your role as Teacher in Charge of Volleyball. Our teams are very lucky to have you! Enjoy a well deserved Easter break everyone!
