Maui and the Fish

Miss Jane Spencer —

The Year 2 and 4 classes joined together to create a collaborative piece of art during Māori Language Week.

They read, watched and acted out parts of the Māori Legend of ‘Maui and the Fish’. This legend tells how New Zealand came to be.

Each child was able to wharanga (weave) parts of moana (ocean). We explored what different koru designs represent and then with a small group decorated our own fish hooks. Each group also created their own fishing line using traditional Māori colours of whero(red), pango (black), and mā (white).

You can view their amazing art piece in the school office where it is on display.
