Columba Rowers on the dais at SISS

Mrs Sinclair —

Columba College rowers raced at the SISS regatta in Twizel gaining some fantastic results.

The SISS Rowing Championships were held on the weekend of 3 - 4 March in Twizel.  Columba College was represented by a team of 24 rowers racing in ten different races.

Racing was held under perfect conditions with seven crews qualifying for finals. The first crew to race in the A finals was the Under 17 four of Amber Cunningham, Ellen Foley, Janey Gibbons, Millie Wright, Megan Maslin (cox). The final was a repeat of the heat for this crew with Craighead taking out the win and Columba gaining the silver medal in this race over Rangi Ruru. This Under 17 four then went on to race in the Under 18 four final and here they gained a very credible bronze medal. These four rowers and coxswain combined with Ella Heffernan, Niamh Paterson, Nakita Horne and Abby Griffin to race the Under 17 Eight, coming 4th in the A final.

The Under 16 eight also raced in the A final and placed 4th and showed a lot of potential for the racing ahead. Rowers who made up this boat were: Janey Gibbons, Tessa Campbell, Ella Heffernan, Nakita Horne, Niamh Paterson, Siena Snow, Cara Busse, Antonia Bachop, Amelia Findlater (cox).

The Under 15 four of Antonia Bachop, Niamh Paterson, Jazlyn Edmonds, Siena Snow, Amelia Findlater (cox) won the under 15 race convincingly and look like a strong prospect for upcoming Maadi Cup. Three of these rowers – Antonia, Jazlyn and Siena combined with Cara Busse and Mary Gavin (cox) to race the Under 18 Novice four – coming fourth.

This regatta was fabulous practice for the team before competing at the New Zealand Secondary School Rowing Championships in Twizel.
