Columba Student Selected for Otago Cross Country Team

Mrs G Beardmore —

Congratulations to Year 11 student, Faith Courtney, on being selected for the U18 Women's Otago team to compete in the NZ Cross Country Championships at Chisholm Links (Saturday 7th August 2021).

Faith is a member of the Hill City University Athletics Club in Dunedin, and her selection for the Otago team to compete in the NZ Cross Country Champs was a big step up for Faith. She is still only 15 years of age, but due to birthdate regulations, she now competes in the U18 grade.

Faith put in a very gutsy effort on the day of competition, racing against a tough field of competitors. An undulating 5km hilly course did not offer much let up for runners. Tough conditions saw some sunshine initially, then a quick change to wind, showery rain and freezing cold temperatures. Faith should be extremely proud of herself for completing the course in 24min 28sec. Plagued with troublesome cramps, she was unable to obtain a PB but she pushed on and finished strong, showing her grit, strength and determination on race day.

We are all very proud of Faith and her willingness to put herself out there on the front line. She has used this experience positively, and as part of her training towards the upcoming athletics season and NZ Secondary Schools National Athletics in December. Well done, Faith, on being selected for the Otago Under 18 team at such a young age. A fantastic result on Saturday considering the weather and conditions!

Congratulations also to Year 9 Columba student, Lila Rhodes, who also competed in the event in the U14 girls' category. Despite tough conditions, Lila's result placed her in the top 8 for NZ.

Well done to our rising stars!
