Otago Science Fair

Ms C Hillier and Mrs S Graves —

Year 8 spent the majority of Term 2 working on a range of Science Fair projects.

They were duly judged in the Columba Science Fair competition by our honorary judge, Mrs Barbara Duncan. Mrs Duncan taught at the College for a number of years and is a firm supporter of women in STEM. A total of 16 entries were selected from Year 8 to be entered into the Aurora Otago Science Fair Competition. Finalists, accompanied by Ms Hillier, Mrs Graves and Nora Paicu (Year 12), lined up outside the Otago Museum. It was a bright wintery morning, students were positive and eager to present their research to the universities panel of judges.

Of the 16 Year 8 entries, Columba received an impressive 26 awards. Furthermore, Nora was awarded a total of four prizes for her entry, bringing the total to 30 awards for the College. A special mention was also made of Beth Elder’s entry as she was featured on the Psychology Department's Facebook page- see link here.  Beth represented the College well, demonstrating the values of GRACE, her astute nature and real absolute promise as a student of Science. Ka pai, Beth, and all students who worked hard to investigate a scientific area of their own choice.

Thank you to all parents and staff who have been involved in supporting students with the Science Fair.

Thank you to the Science Fair organising committee, for cultivating a great connection between Otago schools and the University year after year.
