Blessing for Pounamu

Mrs E Harris —

Columba's newest taonga

Our 2022 Tikaka Prefect, Lucy Cowie, was presented with the Columba  pounamu today as thanks for her service from former Columba teacher, Ms Ailsa Rose. Ms Rose has blessed the pounamu and this taonga will now pass to each successive Tikaka Prefect to be worn with their uniform during their period of service. Lucy will now wear the pounamu over the summer break and then pass it on at the beginning of Term 1, 2023.

Lucy has done incredible work this year and will always be remembered for her contributions toward promoting tikanga and te reo Māori at the College. Of note, Lucy organised, ran, and hosted our first dedicated Matariki assembly and was instrumental in helping Matua Price and Ms Andrew bring back Kapa Haka to Columba. Lucy also initiated and chaired our Tikaka committee, giving voice and agency to our rakatahi Māori in Years 7-13. Earlier this year, her work was acknowledged through her receipt of a Mana Pounamu award.

Lucy's hard work will be continued and her projects further developed by our 2023 Tikaka Prefect, Elloise Cameron. Elloise will receive the Columba pounamu for 2023 at our prefect commissioning service in February at Knox Church.
