ANZAC Biscuit Bake-Off

Ms J Lach —

Year 7 Social Studies class learns about the history of ANZAC Day and the famous biscuits that were sent to the soldiers from their families.

In Year 7 Social Studies, students have been learning about the World Wars. In this unit, we looked at how the Gallipoli Campaign became the symbol of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps’ (ANZACs) sacrifice. We learned about the conditions that ANZAC soldiers had to endure in the trenches and even performed trench warfare reenactments. We also learned that families would send care packages and letters to the soldiers, which brought them great comfort. Sometimes, they were sent special biscuits that were easy to make and were able to last being shipped around the world. These became known as ANZAC biscuits.

The classes took part in a bake-off to see who could make the perfect ANZAC biscuit. Mr Hayden was our special-guest judge, and though the competition was tough, Sophie Butson was the ultimate baker after considering taste, crunch, appearance and authenticity.
