The Otago Primary and Intermediate Athletics Championships were held on Tuesday 20th November at the Caledonian under a beautiful blue sky and bright sunshine. Columba College had a group of 18 students participating in the championship event and some superb results were achieved!

Congratulations to the 18 students across Years 5-8 who represented Columba College at the annual Otago Athletics Championships held recently in Dunedin. Some very impressive results were recorded across both the track and field events, and we are extremely proud of all our athletes for their effort, positive support of each other, and fantastic behaviour across the course of the day. It was a pleasure to be managing such a respectful and enthusiastic group of young people!

As always, competition was strong, with athletes attending the championship event having been selected through results achieved at the various zone athletics champs across the region. While all Columba athletes performed extremely well in their respective track and field events, there were a number of outstanding results achieved:

Honor (Year 7) - Set a new Otago record in her U13 Girls 80m Sprint heat with a time of 11.33 seconds, shaving 17 seconds off the existing record. Honor then went on to break her own newly set record in the final, with a time of 11.22 seconds! In the field events, Honor also won the U13 Girls long jump with an impressive jump of 4.82m and came 2nd in the U13 Girls High jump (1.35m). Amazing stuff, Honor!

Marie (Year 8) - 1st place in the over-13 Girls High jump (1.30m) and 6th place in the over-13 Girls Long Jump. 

Gabrielle and Georgie (Year 5) - 6th and 7th place respectively in the U11 Girls 80m Sprint final after they both ran great races in their heats to set up and showdown in the final! 

Anna (Year 8) - 5th place in the over-13 Girls Long Jump (3.99m) and 2nd in the Year 7/8 Girls 800m race.

Aisling (Year 8) - 6th in the over-13 Girls discus (15.51m) and 7th in the over-13 Girls shot put (7.16m).

Devon (Year 8) - 4th in the over-13 Girls Discus (17.97m).

Samuel and Henry (Year 6) - 3rd and 6th place respectively in the Year 5/6 Boys 800m race.

Holly (Year 8) - 4th in the U13 Girls Long Jump (4.22m).

Madison (Year 8) - 6th in the U13 Girls 70m Hurdles final.

Congratulations also to the U13 Girls Relay Team (Isabella, Holly, Ruby, and Honor) who placed 3rd in their 200m Relay Final, and the U11 Girls Relay Team consisting of Ruby, Gabrielle, Emmerson, and Georgie who placed 5th in their 200m Relay final. Well done, Columba College! All athletes participating on the day did so with wonderful pride and passion and should be very proud of their achievements representing our school.

Thank you to all the fabulous parents and families who came out to support Columba on Tuesday, and especially those parents who helped to coordinate and manage the day of competition. Your help in ensuring all our athletes were where they needed to be, at the right time, was greatly appreciated!
