Dunedin Primary & Intermediate Schools Triathlon

Mrs G Beardmore —

Columba College had over 40 junior and intermediate students sign up for the Sport Otago Triathlon at Port Chalmers on Wednesday this week, and our runners, cyclists and swimmers had a fantastic day of competition!

With over 550 students and 35 different schools participating in this fabulous annual event, Columba's up-and-coming junior athletes arrived bright and early on Wednesday morning for their race briefing under very drizzly skies and damp conditions. Spirits were high; the rain was unable to dampen the excitement. Columba College was represented well across all ages groups in the Year 5 - 8 triathlon event, and we are extremely proud of the efforts of all our students.

All athletes from Columba competed in the team events. We had entries in the boys, girls, and mixed team age categories.

Triathlon Distances:

Year 5/6 – Run 1.5km, Bike 4km, Swim 92 metres (3 laps)

Year 7/8 – Run 2.5km, Bike 6km, Swim 153 metres (5 laps)

Some terrific results were seen over the course of the morning, and special congratulations are extended to the following teams;

Year 7 Columba Yellow Team Harlow La Hood, Rhianjali Giles and Ruby Nicholson: 2nd in their race

Year 6 Columba Wild Wolves Team Isabella van Aart, Ruby McIlroy and Ailie Somerville: 2nd in their race

Year 5 Columba Lakers Team William Henderson, Fletcher Ho, and Sophie Wellington: 2nd in their race

Year 5 Columba Celtics Team Ruby Tilyard, Poppy Hussey and Eden Walker: 4th in their race

Well done to our place-getters, and to all Columba students who took part in the event this year. A big thank you also to parents, friends and family of Columba who helped with transport, and came out in less than ideal conditions to support our athletes. We wish those who are going on to the Otago Regional Triathlon Championships in Balclutha in a few weeks time all the very best of luck!
