SISS Triathlon & Duathlon Champs

Mrs G Beardmore —

Columba College had six athletes competing in the South Island Secondary Schools Triathlon/Duathlon Championships in Oamaru over the weekend, with impressive results achieved by this dedicated group of students.

On Sunday, 5th March 2023 the SISS Triathlon/Duathlon was held in Oamaru. Columba had six athletes attend the championship event and some incredible results were achieved with everyone achieving a podium finish!

Year 11 student, Melanie, competed in the U16 girls' Individual Triathlon, coming away with a bronze medal in a very tough and competitive field. Melanie consistently trains hard and this was reflected in her great performance. She completed the 300m harbour swim, 12km bike, and 2.5km run in 38 minutes and 43 seconds. What a tremendous effort!

Columba had two teams competing in the U19 Senior Girls Duathlon consisting of Kayla and Faith (Columba Doves), and Anya, Lila, and Heidi (Columba Seniors). The challenging wet conditions did not stop these athletes as they dominated the course coming away with 1st place (Kayla and Faith), and 2nd place (Lila, Anya, and Heidi). All team members competed exceptionally well, with Faith winning the first run stage, and Kayla being the fastest female cyclist - overall their team was not far behind the winning male team! What a stellar effort from the Columba girls!

Well done to everyone who competed; we are all very proud of your achievements. Thank you again to all the parents who helped the girls prepare and be able to get to the event.

We wish Melanie and the Columba Doves all the best as they prepare for Nationals in a few weeks!
