Introducing our 2022 Academic Prefect: Sophie Bowmar

Mrs E Harris —

Sophie will lead the Academic Committee in 2022. This group of Year 7 to Year 13 girls drive initiatives to continue to improve our learners' experiences of the College's core business: academic success. As a student who always strives to excel academically and has proven that she can handle responsibility through her debating work, we knew straight away that Sophie is the perfect fit for this role.

What year did you start at Columba?

Year 7 (2016)

What is your best Columba memory so far?

I loved Year 8 camp because Doubtful Sound is so beautiful and possibly because it was the only camp that we didn’t get a gastro bug on.

What were your thoughts when Mrs Harris offered you the role of Academic Prefect?

I was so excited! I felt really grateful and lucky as the role is such a big privilege. A little part of me worried I wouldn’t live up to it with such big shoes to fill, however I am really looking forward to giving it my best.

How have your parents responded?

They were really happy for me!

What life experience do you believe prepares you for your prefect role?

I am the middle child of five siblings! From a young age I have had to learn how to get along with people and communicate, and often be really diplomatic. It has taught me to be independent when I need to be but also how to work well in a team.

What are your passions beyond school?

I spend a lot of my time debating and training for debating, but I also love getting outside, being involved with the arts, working my part time job, and have just recently been spending lots of time with my new puppy, Winnie.

What are your personal and academic goals for 2022?

My academic goals are to maintain excellence in all my standards in 2022. I would love to receive a scholarship to Victoria University in Wellington, or possibly Otago.

If you could be an animal, what would it be and why?

I would be a giraffe because I am quite tall and you can usually spot my head above everyone else’s in a crowd so I think it would suit me nicely.
