Film Analysis at Otago University

Emma Davis 9Be —

On Monday18 September, Year 9Be went to the University to learn about analysing films.

Recently, 9Be has been studying a movie called Remember the Titans. We have been learning film techniques, such as camera angles and lighting, and how all the techniques help make the movie easier for the mind to understand what is happening.

The lecturer was Dr Catherine Fowler. She explained that film study can seem easy but getting into depth is very complicated and every technique used is used for a certain purpose.

We learnt how the camera angle could help connect with a character.

The movie we analysed at the university was Spiderman. A fascinating thing was that even the costumes and colours that actors are wearing is key to a movie.

It was a great learning experience that helped us appreciate the length movie producers go to to show an idea in a movie.
