Learning German through music

Miss C Gardiner —

On the 23rd of March, four students from the senior German class headed to Otago University to take part in a language and music workshop, run by German rap artist An Jay.

The students attended the workshop with the 300 level German class and their lecturer, Antonie Alm. However, on arrival, it was advised that An Jay would not make it. His flight had been cancelled and the next flight would arrive well after the workshop had finished. Luckily, Yona Brand, from the Goethe Institute for German Language and Culture, had managed to fly in that morning from Wellington. To give the students a better understanding of what the Goethe Institute offers students of German, Antonie interviewed Yona in German to find out how she had come to be the Head of Languages for the New Zealand branch of the institute. This gave the students an opportunity to settle in and listen to some German spoken by native speakers. Afterwards, Yona led the group in a musical exercise, which showed how language and culture can be explored with music, using a song by German artist, Namika. Despite the morning not going as planned, it was a successful morning, with the students getting to test out their spoken German, whilst enjoying some German Pop Music.
