Chinese Gate Class Chinese Shadow Puppetry

Ms M Li —

Recently, students in the Year 7 to Year 10 Chinese Gate class explored the traditional art of Chinese Shadow Puppetry, focusing on characters from the famous novel Journey to the West (西游记xī yóu jì). Over four lessons, guided by Miss Li, they learned about the history and techniques behind shadow puppetry, crafting their own puppets from carved leather and animating them behind a lit screen.

Students recreated key characters such as White Dragon Horse (白龙马Bái lóngmǎ), 唐僧Táng céng,沙僧Shā céng, 孙悟空Sūnwùkōng, 猪八戒Zhūbājiè,White Bone Demon (白骨精 Báigǔjīng), paying close attention to detail while learning about the cultural significance of these figures in Chinese folklore.

This hands-on project not only enhanced their artistic skills but deepened their understanding of Chinese culture and history. We look forward to more creative projects that bring our students closer to the rich tapestry of world cultures.
