Kiri Parata visits the Maori language class

Ms A Rose —

Kia ora koutou, The year 9 Māori Language class had a lovely learning session at school this week with visiting guest Kiri Parata.

As part of this session we sang a waiata, enjoyed kai and shared our mihimihi/personal greeting. In the second half of the session the focus was on the topic of "Whakataukī" (Māori proverbs).

In prior weeks the students had chosen a Māori whakataukī and made a poster of this to bring along to share during this session. Kiri shared her knowledge about this topic with us, and also some of her favourite whakataukī. These wise and encouraging sayings are a big part of te ao Māori/the Māori world, and are a common element of the language.

It was a wonderful session to be a part of and we would like to thank Kiri (and her baby Kelly-Rhain) for taking the time to be part of this learning with us.

Ngā mihi, Ailsa Rose
