Experiencing Isolation at Easter

Dr Macleod —

As we spend Easter physically isolated in our 'bubbles', it is worth reflecting on the separations that Jesus experienced during Good Friday.

The usual routine has been interrupted for all of us. This Easter, we will not be able to travel, go on holiday, visit family or go to church. We will experience Easter, the most significant event in the Christian calendar, in isolation.

Yet this is not completely inconsistent – Jesus experienced profound isolation at Easter. He was separated from his friends and all who were close to him. He was cut off from justice and from human kindness. He experienced separation from God (Matthew 27:46) and ultimately lost his life. He went through all of this to bring forgiveness and life to others.

Sacrificial love is at the heart of the Easter story. As we continue to face the challenges of lockdown, let us remember the love that was shown to us at Easter. And let us also remember that the story did not end at the cross, but with the hope of the resurrection.
