Swimming Sports Day

Miss P Hopcroft —

On Friday 4th June Columba held their annual swimming sports day, plenty of enthusiasm and house spirit was shown by all participants.

It was a very successful day, and all students who got involved had a lot of fun and many laughs were had. There was a perfect mix of competitive and fun events across the morning, which allowed for all swimmers with a range of abilities to enter the pool.

The day was packed with house events, relays, amazing dive presentations, egg and spoon races and the crowd favourite Jump Jam! The morning got underway with a dive display from members of our very own Columba dive team Georgia Houghton (Yr 9), Sophie Derbyshire (Yr 10) and Elizabeth Dearden (Yr 8). These divers gained many praises from their peers and teachers.

We then moved onto house chants which never fail to spark friendly competition between our students, and only continued to grow throughout the day. It was Solway who took out the win due to their level of enthusiasm and of course noise. It was awesome to see waves of red, blue, green and yellow spotted in the stands and around the pool during the day. Swimmers then split off into their competitive and non-competitive events.

At the competitive end, swimmers were able to enter into strokes they wished to compete in, they would then swim in their age group. This seen for a lot of fun competition between peers and there was a high level of skill displayed by our athletes. Many of the races were close, which also made for a thrilling watch. Attached are the times and placings of all competitive swimmers and below are the overall winners of each year group:

Year 7 Winner - Charlee Smith

Year 8 Winner - Cameryn Smith

Year 9 Winner – Charli Sinclair

Year 10 Winner - Amelia Loudon

Year 11-13 Winner - Poppy Henderson

Down the non-competitive end, we had a multitude of fun races which included an egg and spoon race, chariot race, best-dressed race and doughnut race. These events proved to be a huge hit with everyone! There was also an area of the pool for those who wanted to swim leisurely.

Nearing the end of the day, all participants came together in the shallow end of the pool for the inter-house competitions. We had the annual handstand, splash and dash and Jump Jam competitions which brought out the competitive side in all swimmers. These events provided plenty of entertainment with students cheering on their own house members on and everyone getting involved.

The last event of the day was the relay swimming races. This saw houses, day girls, boarders, Year 13 students, prefects and staff go up against each other and was a great way to end our day.

It was an awesome day that saw great results in the water - both competitively and socially!
