Otago Secondary School Netball Champions!

Mrs G Beardmore —

The OSS Netball Championships were held at the Edgar Centre over Sunday 13th and Monday 14th June and Columba College had four teams entered in the competition. A superb few days of netball was seen and Columba is extremely proud to celebrate the achievement of our 10A team who won the Year 10 competitive division. Congratulations girls!

Columba College Senior A, Senior B, 10 A and 9 A netball were fortunate to play in the recent Otago Netball Championships, and this well organised tournament is a great way for our teams to prepare for and gain valuable experience leading into the Junior South Island Secondary School champs (12-14th July, Christchurch), and the Senior SISS Champs in Timaru (30th August - 2nd September).

Senior A: Despite having to limp their way through the competition with a number of injuries, the Senior A team had two good wins first up against St Kevin's College and Mt. Aspiring College on the Sunday, which put them straight through to the quarter finals on Monday morning. In the quarter final they came up against South Otago High School and secured a good win, 45-21. A great effort by our Columba team, considering their player availability and injury status.

In the semi finals, the Senior A team came up against an impressive and in-form OGHS Senior A team. After a valiant effort, Columba went down to Otago Girls, and eventually came away in 4th place overall for the Senior A section 1 division. Well done, team. You can hold your heads high after putting in a solid effort.

Senior B: The Senior B team entered the tournament in a positive space after being at the top of their table in Saturday competition. Excited about the prospect of playing against College B teams from around the Otago district, the team lost their first match by 1 goal after a highly spirited tussle with Dunstan College. The team regrouped and then went on to finish the day strong beating OGHS Senior B and Mt Aspiring College B to end up in the semi finals against St. Hilda's Collegiate. The team was very excited to come up against SHCS, as they do not get the opportunity to play St. Hilda's in their regular Saturday competition.

The semi final on Monday arrived, and after a tight first quarter, SHCS proved too strong and went on to win this game (and ultimately the competition). Columba then finished the tournament with a good win over Wakatipu High School to finish the tournament in 3rd place overall. Congratulations, Senior B!

Year 9 A: We are extremely proud of our Columba 9 A team, who are consistently giving it their all, even though results are not coming their way (yet!). It was a tough tournament for the team; however, Columba is extremely lucky to have the support of team manager Jane Walker, Jo Hurst, and parents such as Lisa Turner providing assistance to our two Year 13 coaches Rachael Turner and Bridget Smith.

After coming up against some super tough opposition including Dunstan 9 A (who were eventual winners) and St. Kevin's College, the team went on to win against South Otago High School, and placed 10th overall.

Well done, 9A, for your team spirit, positivity, and attitude. Keep working hard and results will come your way!

Year 10 A:

An absolutely fantastic tournament for this group of netball stars! Unbeaten across both days of competition, the 10 A team had superb wins over Dunstan 10 A and St. Kevin's College to advance through to the semi finals.

Up against Waitaki Girls High School in the semi final, the 10 A team had yet another strong win (57-15), and secured their well-deserved place in the final against St. Hilda's Collegiate 10 A. Exciting!

Another stellar performance from our Columba 10 A team resulted in them taking out the final 41-14! What a great effort by this impressive team. They are the Otago Secondary School Year 10 Netball Champions and we are all immensely proud!

Thank you to all our Columba College dedicated netball coaches, managers, parent supporters, and friends of the school who are consistently on the side lines giving encouragement to our young netball players. Your input and support is greatly appreciated, and we look forward to celebrating further successes with you all as the season progresses.
