Important Information Re - Senior Course Information Evening and 2021 Course and Career Handbook

Ms K Riepl —

Senior Course Information evening: Wednesday 9 September held in Constance Hall. It is vital given the extension of Level 2 that all people wishing to attend must register via the email below. We need to ensure that we meet Level 2 Covid regulations.

5.00 - 6.00pm:  Current Year 10 cohort - course planning for Year 11 in 2021

6.00 - 7.00pm:  Year 11 and 12 cohort - course planning for Year 12 and 13 in 2021

There are many factors that will influence your daughter's decisions regarding the courses she will take in the senior school. A 2021 Columba College course and careers handbook has been created outlining the courses available at each NCEA level. Please click on this link: 2021 Course and Careers Handbook . We encourage both students and parents/caregivers to attend the evening to help with the decision making process.

In discussions about this at home, think about options that:

  • she will enjoy
  • she will experience success in
  • provides her with a pathway for further study and lifelong learning

Teachers of senior subjects will be available to discuss their NCEA programmes and future pathways related to each course and subject area. As Careers Advisor, I will be available for any questions, along with representatives from the University of Otago and Otago Polytechnic (who will be available for individual questions from 5.30pm). Please do not hesitate to ask any question, no matter how small it is, in relation to future study and pathways.

Our NZQA Coordinator Mr Tagg will give a presentation on understanding NCEA at 5.00pm for those who are new to the system. This will be followed by a small presentation with a panel of Year 13 students who can talk from experience about their course choices.

Each student needs to select specific courses using the parent portal by the end of Tuesday, 15th September. This early indication will help us to confirm the subjects we can offer, as some are dependent on the final number of students choosing a subject. Once we have subject options in place, the school can start working on the 2021 timetable so that we are well prepared for the new academic year. Further course advice and final timetables will be sent out at the beginning of 2021.

To register for the course information evening please email: careers@columbacollege.school.nz. You must include the number of attendees.

Meanwhile, I have included some questions to help prompt student discussions on subject choices both at home and with their teachers.

I look forward to joining you at this important event.
