Calligraphy is a Fine Art

Miss C Gardiner —

Students need to focus, observe and analyse the characters’ structure carefully, then control their brush pen and pen to write the words.

Calligraphy includes soft-pen calligraphy and hard-pen calligraphy.

Soft-pen Calligraphy is widely known as a traditional Chinese form of writing with a brush and ink. This year, Year 5 – Year 13 Chinese students have learned “Regular Script Chinese Calligraphy Writing”, this style of writing is also called “Normal Style” or “Square Style”. It is the style used the most, and the one that is the easiest to read.

Hard-pen calligraphy started to develop in the 1900's when fountain pens were imported into China from the west. Now days, hard-pen calligraphy is the writing art of making beautiful or elegant handwriting by pen. Year 4 – Year 13 Chinese students are learning hard-pen calligraphy regularly in our Chinese classroom.

Each year, we send students’ outstanding calligraphy works to participate in the New Zealand Soft-Pen and Hard-Pen Calligraphy Competition organised by Confucius Institute.
