Dunedin Schools' Debating Junior Final Winners

Ms Togneri —

Congratulations to the two Columba College Junior DSD teams who broke to the semi-finals held at Kavanagh College on the 21st of August.

One  semi-final between Columba 2 and Otago Girls' was contested and lost in a close debate. Well done to Melissa Van der Haegen, Anise Maclean and Sophie Boyle.

Otago Girls' were defeated by Columba 1 in the final, well done to Annabel Kelly, Charlotte Werner and Sophie Bowmar on their win. The motion for the final was 'This house believes that people who are vegetarian or vegan should pressure their friends to become vegetarian or vegan'.

Having coached these students (some since they were in Year 7) our contingent of seniors at the finals were very proud to have two Columba teams break and then for Columba to take out the win.

As well as securing the win Columba gained the following awards. I encourage students who are interested in debating (and maybe not wanting to join a team, perhaps just listening  and learning for a while) to come along to G2 at lunchtimes on Tuesday as it is never too late to join.
