Columba College Sports Day

Mrs Beardmore —

A misty, damp start to the morning did not deter spirits as the 2020 Columba College annual Sports Day was held at the Caledonian Ground on Tuesday 18th February. The day was full of friendly competition, athletic excellence, incredible house spirit, and heart-warming teamwork, and what a wonderful way to showcase the positive spirit of our sporting culture here at Columba.

A new spin on Columba's annual sports day saw all students across Years 0 -13 invited to participate in the school Sports Day for 2020. Students arrived bright and early, proudly wearing their house colours, ready for a full day of fun and competition. House Spirit was high, and students came dressed in a wonderful array of 'colour and comaraderie'.

9am saw the start of the track and field events, with a very tight minute-by-minute schedule keeping all our hard working teaching and support staff on their toes, ensuring events ran smoothly and on time. Some fantastic results were recorded across many events, with a number of records broken in both track and field. We look forward to detailing these results for our school community once they are official.

One highlight of the day was the Inter-House whole school relays, which saw each House group unite together to run a complete lap of the track. Seeing the older students supporting (and in many cases carrying!) their younger peers to help them complete the lap was brilliant. Attestation to the spirit of friendship and community here at Columba!

Yet again the novelty events for 2020 were a crowd favourite, and participation in the soccer dribbling, pairs balance challenge, frisbee throw, sack race, and tug-of-war (to name a few) was high. The addition of these novelty events means no matter what your athletic ability is, there is something for everyone at Sports Day!

Overall house points for the day have been counted, and the much anticipated results are as follows:

1st Place = Braemar (2397 points)

2nd Place = Solway (2185 points)

3rd Place = Iona (1915 points)

4th Place = Girton (1852 points)

Congratulations Braemar for coming out in top place for 2020!

Sports day finished with a Staff vs Year 13 vs Prefects vs Parents relay race, and while this event never fails to provide much enjoyment for all spectators, our thoughts are with our amazing Director of Sport, Dayna Turnbull, who sustained an injury to her left knee while running this race. An unfortunate end to an otherwise successful day, and one that required ambulance attendance, however we are pleased to report that Miss Turnbull has come through surgery well, and no doubt will be back in her office and on the road to recovery in no time! The Columba community wishes Miss Turnbull a super speedy recovery and return to the touch field!

Well done to everyone for your participation on the day. We especially thank all the parents who supported Sports Day, the teachers and support staff who worked tirelessly across the day, and to all those selling sausages - and our fabulous Columba beanies and blankets - your efforts make a real difference to students right across the school. Thank you also to the Columba Sports Council for providing a catered lunch for parents, supporters and staff. This was greatly appreciated!

We look forward to making our next Sports Day even better and brighter than this year. Bring on 2021!
