Wheelchair Rugby

Miss V Eason —

Hannah Scott tells the New Entrant class all about her recent experience.

Yesterday Hannah Scott (an old girl of the College) attended her weekly visit to the Year 0-1 class. This week, she presented a speech to the children about her Wheelchair Rugby experience in Auckland.

Hannah represented Otago in this paralympic sport. Everyone in the game was seated in a special rugby wheelchair with a seatbelt and straps over their feet. Competitors wore gloves taped to their wrists. To stop the other team from scoring a goal, the players had to wheel as fast as they could and crash into their wheelchairs. Chair on chair contact was permitted, but no personal contact was allowed. Wheelchair Rugby is a very speedy game as players have to bounce or pass the ball every ten seconds. There were lots of things that could go wrong -even tiny things mean you spend an entire minute in the penalty box, otherwise known as the 'sin bin.'

Hannah loved her trip to Auckland. She loved meeting new people, making friends and especially being part of a team.

The children all had a turn in Hannah's special wheelchair. They used their hands to change direction and wheel from A to B.
