Boarders From 1940s and 1950s Visit

Mrs Seaton —

There was laughter, stories, and so much chat as old friends caught up with one another when a group of boarding students from the 1940s and 1950s visited the College last Friday.

Our current students provided a very warm welcome and the connection was soon established. The students loved hearing stories from the past and appreciated learning some more about the history of Columba and the part they play in the Columba College community that is so much more than the day to day routine.

The stories ranged from secret stairways being explored during late night escapades in Bishopscourt; sunbathing on the roof of Bishopscourt (with little regard to health and safety!); to mail home being opened and perused before it was posted! The “rules” of the boarding house in 1955 were read and met with gales of laughter from the current boarding students who have a new appreciation of the freedom they enjoy in today’s environment. A display of memorabilia provided a great talking point – including a purple dress worn as a summer uniform during war years when wool was difficult to access (called the “rainbow uniform”, students could choose from purple, pink, blue, lemon or green).

Our students absolutely shone at the events and we have received many warm notes of appreciation from the women who visited us. It was a truly memorable day for all involved.

With many thanks to Holly Bancroft, year 13, for the fabulous photos.
