Curling Team shines Bright during Bonspiel

Mr J Hayden —

Over the past weekend (August 7-9), the Dunedin Ice Stadium was the hottest place in town, as 15 teams from around Te Wai Pounamu took part in the 2020 South Island Secondary Schools Curling Championships.

The Columba College contingent (comprising Year 11 students Maddie ‘LeBron’ Anton, Maya ‘Take it to the House’ Bromby, Sienna ‘Supercoach’ Harper, Ella 'The Enforcer’ Herbert and Isi 'The Hammer' Weston-Cooke) arrived armed with a mere two and a half hours of curling experience under their belts. Such meagre ice-time meant the team struggled against those in their division - a division that contained no less than three New Zealand Under-21 representatives. Nonetheless, the team’s enthusiasm and willingness to learn served them well, leading to a close 6-3 loss in the last round of competition – two stones away from a playoff berth in their fifth ever game!

Well done to our Columba Curling team, who represented the school flawlessly, and a hearty thanks to all the supporters who showed up to cheer on the team for the Thriller in The Chiller.
