Columba Pumas win Futsal Final

Mrs Graamans —

The Columba Pumas had their final in the Year 7/8 Girls Division 1 Futsal competition against the table topping Kavanagh Sparks.

Columba had played Kavanagh twice through the season losing 5-0 in the first round and narrowly losing to them again 2 weeks ago. Kavanagh are far and away the tallest team in the comp with most of them a full head taller than the Pumas. So goals for the final were to run hard and fast right from the start! An early goal from Sophia Body created early pressure and the Pumas didn’t let up. Kate Baskerville worked hard on shutting down Kavanagh's attack before they could even get out of their half. A first half hat-trick to Sophia and 3-1 to the Pumas at half time.

A much tighter second half and the Pumas were determined not to let the Sparks in despite them throwing everything at us. Emily Ward was a superstar in defence. Special mention to Aminah Ahmad and Melanie Button who had half a game each in goal and both did a fantastic job, and great work on the wings in open play. The match was tight right until a late goal from Melanie put it beyond doubt at 4-1.

An awesome team effort from the Pumas and amazing to see a team of year 7s take out the year 7/8 competition! They have improved all term and won the final with teamwork, speed, skill, and determination.

Thanks to all the students who played for the Pumas this term and a big thank you to Mr Robert Body for dedicating his time and effort coaching the team.
