Makos South Island Junior Swimming Championships

Last weekend, the Makos South Island Junior Swim Championships were held at Moana Pool. There were 125 competitors from all over the South Island. Columba College had four swimmers racing during the weekend.

All the girls swam exceedingly well, with very tough competition.

Highlight results were:

Eivi (10-year-old category)

  • 3rd 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle, 100 IM, and 100m backstroke
  • 4th 50 m Backstroke
  • 5th 50m Butterfly


Gwendolyn (10-year-old category)

  • 3rd 200m freestyle
  • 4th 100m backstroke (PB)
  • 6th 50m backstroke (PB)
  • 6th 100m freestyle (PB)
  • 6th 100m IM.


Méabh (10-year-old category)

  • 3rd 100 breaststroke
  • 4th 50 breaststroke
  • 3rd in 6 x 50 relay
  • 7th for 50 backstroke
  • 9th in 50 freestyle
  • 10th in 50 fly
  • 4 new PBs.


Sophie (11-year-old category)

  • 3rd 200 m Backstroke (7 sec PB and only 0.13 sec behind 1st place!)
  • 3rd 100 m Butterfly (7 sec PB)
  • 2nd Mixed 50m Relay
  • 3rd 200m Freestyle (PB)
  • 3rd 50m Freestyle Relay
  • Sophie also gained other great results coming 4th, 3 x 5th, and 3 x 6th, including 8 PBs.
