Ngā Poaka Iti E Toru/The Three Little Pigs: a bilingual play

Ms A Rose —

On Monday this week, Year 5 and 6 were proud to perform a bilingual play of The Three Little Pigs for the rest of the Junior School and a mix of Year 9 and 10 classes.

This play included words and phrases we had been learning in Te Reo Māori classes.

Some of the children took on the role of introducers, and they explained to the audience what we had been learning. The words and phrases we used included nouns, verbs and adjectives, ordinal numbers and Kī Waha, or sayings.

Yr 2 and 3 helped by performing a song about Kī Waha we can use to encourage others.

All of the children helped in some way - painting the set, narrating, acting a part, helping backstage, lighting, and music.

We were very grateful to Rainny in Year 6 for her wonderful work organising and sewing costumes, and Chris and Nio, also in Year 6, who were in charge of lighting and music for both shows.

It was wonderful to have the support of all teachers, especially Ms Ina Bercinskas, who showed us the ropes in the Caroline Freeman Theatre, and even did a wonderful cameo performance in the Year 6 show.

Thank you to everyone who came to watch. You were a wonderful audience.
