A Plea to Parents and Caregivers

MS RIETHMAIER —

Most of you will have noticed the container that has arrived in the Staff Carpark beside the Sports Centre, which will be with us until the week before the School Fair on 30 March.

This is making maneuvring cars in the parking area quite challenging. This is a car park for the teaching staff and we ask that parents and caregivers use the 5 minute drop-off zones on Highgate or on Oban Street.

Could I also remind you of the school rule pertaining to dyed hair, and ask that you do all you can to support this rule by not allowing your daughters to alter their hair colour. In that regard, you might enjoy a poem written by a former Columba teacher from 1979 - 2007, the late Mrs Dorothy Knudson, in the days when any hint of dyed hair meant time in the detention room.

DYED HAIR

A senior girl in detention last week

Her crime? Dyed hair.

I should have been there too.

She dyed her hair

For fun or fashion....

Me?

I'm lying about my age,

Cheating on time,

Bearing false witness to my years,

Stealing back some pride....

Hows that for a list?

But guard-like, I gave her books to cover

Made sure she completed her sentence;

No bail allowed.

Instead, I should have freed her

To dance and laugh and sing

And covered them myself.
