Ready, Steady, RIDE!

Miss Turnbull —

Over the lockdown period Kayla Millar (Year 10) has been keeping very busy on her bike trainer using a program called Zwift.

The program allows athletes to race against each other virtually and this controls their trainers causing resistance when going up hills etc. Triathlon New Zealand held a 6 week race series, which Kayla participated in. She was going very strong and after the first race was put up a higher category due to her power output.

After race 5 she was in 2nd place overall in the u19 section, however with the last race being a hill climb her power output was over the category limit. This meant that she didn't gain any points for that race as she sadly got a disqualification. Overall she still managed 4th place in New Zealand for the u19 Zwift race series also being one of the youngest competitors. A huge achievement, well done.

Kayla also participated in the SRAM World Women's tour, which she was stoked to be able to ride alongside famous cyclists Justine Barrow, Peta Mullens and local superstar Ella Harris. On Anzac Day she rode representing New Zealand against the Aussie's in the Anzac classic to remember and honour all those brave soldiers who fought and died for their country during World War 1. She gained many personal bests including a brilliant 40km per hour average speed on one of the stages in the tour.

This has only made Kayla hungry for more and she can't wait to get back on the actual road again. As well as keeping her training up on the bike she participated in the Mount Run Challenge which she ran 42km over a period of consecutive 7 days.

The first race of the Tri NZ Series was on the news, below is the link. https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=2966299173448883
