Celebrating Outstanding Results in Speech New Zealand OCESOL Examinations

Mrs R Pettigrew —

Term 4 marked the reestablishment of our international students’ participation in Speech New Zealand's English Language Learners' examinations.  We were delighted to learn that all participating Columba College students were awarded a grade of Excellence or High Excellence - our most outstanding results since we began participating in the examinations over 20 years ago.

The students were entered at different levels, ranging from introductory to elementary, depending on their English proficiency. They were graded on engagement, enthusiasm, fluency, pronunciation and their ability to engage with follow-up questions. Our students delivered their speeches with fluency and flair on a wide range of topics, from Chinese Classical Literature to “Being Chased by a Seal.” They also read excerpts from their favourite English novels and retold traditional stories from their home countries.

It was truly inspiring to witness our international students showcase their language skills and cultural diversity with such confidence and creativity. These outstanding results highlight their mahi and dedication and reflect the vibrant diversity that enriches the Columba College community. We are most grateful to have welcomed back our much loved speech examiner, Pauline Douglas, who has been guiding our international students with her professional feedback for 20 years. We look forward to hearing from our international students in next year’s speech examinations!
