Mihi Whakatau

Miss A Hill, Tiakaka Prefect —

On the 1st of February, Columba College celebrated a historic milestone with our first-ever College-wide Mihi Whakatau, a traditional Māori welcoming ceremony.

This event, rich in mana and aroha, acknowledges the community, blending waiata, whaikōrero and warm welcomes to new students, staff and whānau. The kapa haka performance energized the atmosphere, welcoming the guests while expressing pride. Whaikōrero between Matua Price and Matua Poutama (the speaker for the manuhiri) bridged cultures, sharing traditions and aspirations. The College engaged in traditional waiata to serve as collective agreement and appreciation of the speeches. Mrs Nicol asked us to consider "who is packing your parachute?" and spoke about how we grow as a supportive community showing each other kindness and respect. After a karakia to invoke blessings and set a sacred tone, everyone went to lunch to share kai.  Our special guests - including new staff, prefects and management - proceeded to the boarding village for a gathering and shared kai. Tangata whenua and manuhiri eating together symbolised Kotahitanga and camaraderie within Columba College.  The new people are now part of our community!

Thank you to our Columba photographers Emily (Year 11), Emily (Year 13) and Mr Shaw.
