MR DUCKETT —

The bees have arrived!

At the end of 2018, the Columba College Parents Association kindly agreed to fund the rental of a beehive for use by the GATE Science Club. The beehive arrived on Friday 8 February and the bees are now flying around gathering pollen and nectar.

The aim of this project is to increase student's knowledge of bees, their behaviour and life cycles, as well as giving hands-on opportunity to gain experience of looking after a hive.

The hive has been supplied by Murray and Heidi Rixon of Rentahive.co.nz and they are going to work with students to maintain the colony's health over the year, with the GATE students taking more responsibility as their training and confidence grow.

This project is open to any student who is part of the 2019 GATE Science Programme. The aim of the GATE Science programme is to provide activities and events that will be of interest to students with a passion or ability in Science and to widen and deepen their understanding and enjoyment of Science. The programme is run by Mr Duckett, Ms Hayden and Mr Sparrow.
